On February 5 Melvin Houser, the Pottawattamie Count Supervisor, spoke at the Treynor Optimist Club. The Pottawattamie County taxable valuation is up about 4% from last year, totaling $4.1 billion. Commercial business makes up about 9% of the value, but pays 23% of the tax revenue. That needs to be adjusted to promote business.
The county government consists of a variety of departments. They include the Auditor, the Assessor, the County Attorney, the Recorder, the Sheriff, and the Treasurer’s offices. The Board of Supervisors sets the tax levy, approves the county budget, and sets up other boards and commissions. These boards and commissions include animal control, roads, conservation, veteran’s affairs, and others.
For roads, Time 21 increased the road tax fund by $225M. The county needs an increase of 10 cents in the fuel tax. Dust control is a growing area of expenses. They have completed dust control on Pioneer Trail.
Mevin said that the county government is growing in size. He talked about museums in Oakland and Macedonia that are worth visiting. For more information, see the county website at: http://www.pottcounty.com/
